Miguel Zenón – El País Invisible
Best Instrumental Composition

Released as a digital single in July 2022, EL PAÍS INVISIBLE is a glimpse at a full Navona Records album — by the same name — that is set for release in 2023. Composed by 10-time GRAMMY® nominee Miguel Zenón, the 12-minute track is a deeply musical interpretation of Puerto Rico’s status as a nation, a culture, and an identity, brought to life by an intimate three-saxophone and one piano orchestration.

El País Invisible “happened by accident,” says Zenón, like it was “almost meant to be.”

The Crossing – BORN
Best Choral Performance

Having received two GRAMMY® Awards for Best Choral Performance (2018, 2019), The Crossing received a nomination in the same category this year for BORN: THE MUSIC OF EDIE HILL AND MICHAEL GILBERTSON. This comes as the ensemble’s eighth GRAMMY® nomination, and the third Crossing album from Navona Records to receive a nomination.

“BORN covers a lot of emotional territory and we’re grateful to Edie and Michael for their raw, honest art.” – The Crossing via Instagram

A critically-acclaimed and award-winning composer whose music has been described as “devastatingly beautiful” by The Washington Post, Shawn Okpebholo received a GRAMMY® nomination for his 2022 release, LORD HOW COME ME HERE?. In contention for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album, the Navona Records release features award-winning vocalists J’Nai Bridges and Will Liverman.

The piece, composed by Bernstein in 1936 at age 18 while a student at Harvard University in Cambridge, will be performed by Lucia Lin, Natalie Rose Kress, Danny Kim, and Ronald Feldman, produced by PARMA Recordings, and released on the GRAMMY-winning Navona Records label.

“It’s a rare event indeed to present a premiere of any type by a great master of Bernstein’s stature, much less to have something completely unheard as part of it,” says Bob Lord, CEO of PARMA. “We’re honored to be the stewards of this historic project.”

Music for String Quartet received its debut public performance at Tanglewood’s Linde Center on November 6, 2021 by the same group of performers who will record the piece, but it was never truly lost. The manuscript, given by Bernstein to Stanley Benson of the New England String Quartet following a rehearsal reading, was neatly tucked away in the family music cabinet by Benson’s widow Clara.

Clara, who had performed the piece at home with her own quartet from time to time over the years, mentioned it in passing to her daughter Lisa Benson Pickett.

They told their friend, former Boston Symphony Orchestra Music Librarian John Perkel, about the manuscript. The librarian was shocked to learn that a string quartet, a compositional genre long believed to have been unexplored by Bernstein, existed at all in the influential musician’s catalog.

“I had a hard time believing what I was hearing,” says Perkel, who has steadfastly shepherded the piece from its re-discovery to the upcoming production. “In the world of music and art, there is so much which is forgotten, so much which is unknown, that to be able to shed even just a small beam of new light on a genius of Bernstein’s caliber is incredibly special.”

To Perkel’s delight, shortly after the piece’s public premiere a second movement of the string quartet was discovered at the Library of Congress in Washington DC.

“There was a ‘1’ at the top of the original manuscript,” says Perkel, “so I thought that there might be ‘2’ out there somewhere, and sure enough there was.”

“We are so pleased to record this piece which we’ve grown to love dearly,” says violinist Lin. “It has been exciting to peek into Bernstein’s creative process through the lens of this piece written during his formative years.”

The recording, set to take place in 2023, will also contain the seldom-recorded duo piece Elegies for Violin and Viola by composer Aaron Copland, a musical mentor, collaborator, and dear friend of Bernstein’s.

Details regarding the recording and release will be announced in the coming months. For more information please contact press@parmarecordings.com.

“I love your version of ‘The Backward Swan.’ I listened to the tracks on your album and found them to be very creative and extremely good...
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been visiting Hampton Beach on the New Hampshire seacoast. When I was a boy we would drive up and stroll along on the shore, eat fried dough, play table hockey at the arcade, and take in the sights and sounds of what was always to my young mind a satisfyingly strange, surreal, and sensational experience.

It’s a place with a real history, in an area that has seen (or possibly seen?) everything from spaceships to witches, centuries-old massacres to mid-60s beach riots, vagrants to vacationers, and I always try to remember that I’m only witnessing it, like everything else, for a brief moment along a massive continuum. And I always wonder what will happen next.

Now I live here in Hampton not too far from that beach, one of the biggest and most spectacular in our region, and this past Summer has been the first in my memory when I wasn't able to visit Playland Arcade – my favorite place on the strip – to play Galaga and Centipede and complain about how I *again* got stuck with the crooked skee ball machine.

So while I await a return to the boardwalk I’m sharing with you this preview from my upcoming album PLAYLAND ARCADE, to be released in 2021. Bring a stack of quarters, grab this 6-pack, and enjoy the ride in the meantime.

- Bob

#1 NY Times Bestselling Author Dan Brown Unleashes WILD SYMPHONY

Wild Symphony, featuring music produced by Bob Lord and PARMA Recordings, will be released globally in September 2020

For immediate release

February 20, 2020

(Portsmouth NH) - Dan Brown, #1 New York Times bestselling author of worldwide publishing phenomenon The Da Vinci Code, has unleashed his latest surprise.

Wild Symphony, the new illustrated children’s book and orchestral music recording by Brown, reveals the author as a lifelong musician and composer who counts himself among those inspired at a young age by Peter and the Wolf, The Carnival of the Animals, and The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. The project will be released on September 1, 2020.

Featuring music produced by Bob Lord and PARMA Recordings and performed by the Zagreb Festival Orchestra, Wild Symphony fuses family-friendly sounds, pithy poetry with a positive message, and delightfully playful illustrations in a refreshingly real experience for our digital age.

“I love storytelling, and my novels always attempt to weave together varied themes,” Brown explains. “With Wild Symphony I was excited to build on this idea and create a truly layered experience by using three different languages simultaneously—art, music, and words. In the same way that an opera captivates its audience by presenting beautiful sets, dramatic music, and lyrical drama, Wild Symphony strives to be an immersive feast for eyes, ears, and mind, all at the same time.”

From the joyous rhythms of “Bouncing Kangaroo” to the mysterious melodies of “Wondrous Whale” to the hair-raising harmonies of “Brilliant Bat,” Wild Symphony tells the story of Maestro Mouse and his animal friends embarking on a journey of discovery and friendship. The book will be enhanced with a smartphone app that uses augmented reality to play music from Wild Symphony which corresponds to each animal when the camera of a mobile device is held over its page.

“Wild Symphony combines tradition and tech in signature Dan Brown fashion,” says Lord, CEO of PARMA. “The concert hall needs a new classic, and Wild Symphony is a fresh, vivacious journey for children and parents alike.”

Rodale Kids, an imprint of Random House Children’s Books, will release the book and classical music publisher Boosey & Hawkes will distribute the printed music. Artist Susan Batori created the illustrations.

The recording of Wild Symphony, conducted by Miran Vaupotić, orchestrated by Karl Blench, and mastered by GRAMMY Award-winning engineer Adam Ayan at Gateway Mastering, will be released alongside the book on all major digital distribution platforms.

Live performances of Wild Symphony will be presented by orchestras in dozens of countries worldwide. Details regarding concert premieres, dates, venues, and more will be announced in the coming weeks.

Some major announcements are queued up for the coming weeks, but let's wrap up 2019 first.

Croatia's leading national newspaper Vecernji List ran a nice profile of me at the end of last year, check it out:

Sonograma had some very nice things to say about the new release on my Navona Records label, HOMMAGE TO WOMEN COMPOSERS:

"Bob Lord, CEO of PARMA Recordings, continues to amaze us with the successful recordings that have a brand that distinguishes them: plurality and musical quality."

And the Portsmouth Herald here in seacoast New Hampshire ran an interview with me about our recent GRAMMY nominations:

A fantastical, dreamy, romantic recording with one of loveliest melodies of mid-century American pop music, the tune stayed atop the Billboard charts for 2 weeks in 1959 and has been a live staple of Dreadnaught's for many years.

In addition to all the domestic recordings we did in the U.S., including the latest in our MOTO series with our pal/cellist extraordinaire Ovidiu Marinescu, we also recorded in Croatia, Cuba, and the Czech Republic with everything from symphony orchestras to women's choir to mixed jazz ensemble.

Here are some pictures from the trips. It was tough to sort through all the shots of food and cats, but I made it.

For immediate release

When you own a company that records and releases contemporary orchestral and chamber music, composes and produces audio for international television commercials, and collaborates with the likes of Pete Townshend, your own work can be expected to run the gamut.

“Prog-rock listeners freak out when they hear a chicken-pickin’ guitar, pop listeners turn it off when the meter changes every other bar, classical and jazz listeners generally find it too heavy and bombastic. But there’s a little bit of all that in here, so how exactly do you decode this thing?” asks Bob Lord of Dreadnaught, who in his capacity as CEO of PARMA Recordings was named one of Musical America’s top 30 national ‘Influencers’ in 2015. “I honestly have no idea. It made sense at the time.”

For over two decades Rick Habib (drums), Justin Walton (guitar), and Lord (bass) have defied being decoded and refused any easy categorization, producing numerous eclectic releases, touring the country, and appearing with artists as wide-ranging as legendary Who bassist John Entwistle, author Dan Brown, NRBQ, and even Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. It is an unusual mix.

A high-energy power trio reveling in quirky twists and turns, fast changes, and extended forms, Dreadnaught has a recorded sound built around deep-focus detail. “As a group, we’re not writing songs in the traditional sense, not trying to get the world to sing along,” explains Habib. “We like to make people want to dial in and pay attention, to make them laugh.”

The band’s new album HARD CHARGIN’ is destined to do both. The album’s tracks recall Rush or a sillier Fugazi (the first “That’s the Way You Do It”) one moment, and Willie Nelson or a wonderfully befuddled George Jones (the second “That’s the Way You Do It”) the next. Some tracks come out screaming in full Fred Frith-style madness (“Express Delight”), while some coo and groove their beautiful bassy, brassy way into your ear with the playfulness of Frank Zappa or Steely Dan (“Bo-Leg-Ba”).

On HARD CHARGIN’, Dreadnaught’s studio experience and arrangement expertise busts out left and right, each cut an ornate mosaic of timbre and time. Yet the music works differently in a live setting, where it is pared down by condensing the studio arrangements to better suit the trio format.

“We create a lot of sound together on stage, always have,” says Walton. “But we consider live performance to be a completely different artform than the crafting of a musical recording like this album, and while the tunes are the tunes, we like to approach each in its own way.”

Lord is clear that the band is indeed something unto itself in a business capacity as well as a musical one, which is partly why the album is being released on their own Red Fez label. “I have a policy of complete separation of church and state at PARMA,” he says. “The focus is entirely on the artists and projects we produce as a company, not the personal projects of the staff, myself included, no co-mingling allowed. Dreadnaught is its own thing, for its own purposes, and definitely apart from our day jobs even if they are in the music business.”

The prolonged experimentation of Dreadnaught does appear to have a clear purpose and goal however: Pure enjoyment and amusement for fans of oddball, far out, intellectually acute music and it seems for the band itself.

Going far out isn’t a grim, grave venture for this group, and there are no furrowed avant brows or self-aggrandising composerly ways here. HARD CHARGIN’ has adventurous musical fun at its heart, a feeling the band members trace back to their 1970s childhoods.

“We all watched The Electric Company growing up, Warner Brothers cartoons, Saturday morning television, all these musical experiments shown to kids as part of their regular viewing,” reflects Habib.

“We heard ‘Peg’ as kids while shopping at Marshall’s with our mothers too, that did something,” says Walton.

“And Juicy Fruit. The fact is, when you play with the same people for this long you develop a clearly defined, streamlined shared artistic language. We usually communicate with a short series of grunts and eyelash flicks, or possibly some clicking sounds,” jokes Lord. “We’ve been doing this for a while now, let’s put it that way.”
Bob Lordtag:boblordmusic.com,2005:Post/46888182017-04-28T06:54:46-04:002017-04-28T07:03:29-04:00New single "Bo-Leg-Ba" out now
"Bo-Leg-Ba," from Dreadnaught's upcoming HARD CHARGIN' album, is streaming now at Bandcamp.
